An American Kestrel, the smallest North American Falcon, surveys the landscape of South Park, Colorado from his perch on a shrub. I was named after this remarkable little bird, and five years after making my very first fabric picture, I knew it was time to finally make a Kestrel.

As is my wont, I had to try something new — in this case, it was atmospheric perspective. This was the first expansive landscape I’d designed, and although I knew conceptually how to make atmospheric perspective, I had no idea how to simulate it with fabric. I ended up using layers of light blue tulle, a type of thin netting, to make the mountains disappear into the distance.

This was the first fabric picture I made in college after my illustration professor urged me to start up again. I had spent two years immersed in artistic zeitgeist and I think the experience gained and lessons learned during that time really shows.

NOTE: THIS PRODUCT IS THE FULL LANDSCAPE, NOT JUST THE KESTREL. SEE THE SECOND PHOTO FOR A PREVIEW.
