Henry Hudson’s ship, Halve Maen (”Half Moon” in English), sails along the Hudson River, which was named after him. He had been commissioned by English merchants to find the fabled Northwest Passage to Asia.
Technically speaking, this picture shows a replica of Henry Hudson’s ship. My family lived in Saugerties, NY for many years, and periodically the replica, owned by the New Netherland Museum, would sail in and around the Hudson River in its capacity as a traveling museum. The bridge in the background is the Bear Mountain Bridge which, of course, did not exist in Henry Hudson’s day.
The sky and water were hand-dyed. The rigging is made from embroidery thread, although it’s glued in place instead of stitched.
