Link is the main character from all of The Legend of Zelda video games. The version of Link in this quilt is based on the Link in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (BotW). BotW was the first Zelda game I had ever played, and it remains today one of my all-time favorite games. I was buoyed by my success at recently completing my first two quilts, thrilled to have a machine cutting my fabric for me, and inspired by BotW. Naturally, I had to make a Link quilt. It was the most daunting undertaking I’d set for myself, since I’d never before tried to make a full person out of fabric, but I was up for the challenge. The runes around the outside of the quilt, starting in the bottom left and going clockwise around the quilt, spell the message: By completing this quilt you have already proven your worth. It’s a reference to a similar message that appears in the game itself. My name, Kestrel, is in runes along the bottom. Link was on display at the 2019 International Quilt Festival in Houston as part of the ”Quilted Comics & Sci-Fi” special exhibition.
