Pelicans are my dad’s favorite bird. The original fabric art was a gift to him for Father's Day in 2006. It has survived moves to three different houses in three different states and now hangs on my parents’ kitchen wall.
The design is a composite of five or so different photographs. I especially loved the sky and turned it into this gorgeous explosion of color. I had so much fun choosing the fabrics to make those clouds!
Pelican in Paradise was around the twentieth fabric picture I’d made, and I really pushed myself to include as much detail as possible. It had twice as many pieces of fabric as any of my other creations, and it was challenging to keep track of all those pieces and fabrics in my head. I truly had no idea how it would look until I started putting the pieces together. And cutting 500 pieces of fabric by hand is no simple feat; this was the picture that made me start dreaming of a machine do the cutting for me.
