Flower Garden was the result of too much wine.
I have a very rigid method of making my artwork. Each picture starts with a template, which acts as my appliqué-by-number for the finished artwork. Each piece of fabric was carefully traced onto fusible, numbered, and cut from the fabric. There is no room for spontaneity in my art, but I like that. It’s comforting to know each piece has its place and the finished result will look exactly the way I planned from the beginning.
My mom took it upon herself to get me to, quote, ”loosen up”. The plan was to start drinking, start cutting fabric, keep drinking, and just put those fabric pieces wherever they wanted to go — we would finish the picture and the bottle(s) of wine. Flower Garden was the result. Mom cut the fabric and I arranged it into flowers. But I drew the line at making an improv butterfly. There’s no amount of wine that will get me to make a butterfly without a template, so those three additions I made the following day after recovering from our wine-induced creative spree.
