Great Egret was designed as part of a set with Snowy Egret. The two were birthday and Mother’s Day gifts for my mom.
I had initially tried grey shadows, but that made the egret look dirty — not the desired outcome at all. This is the picture where I learned that blue shadows make a white bird look pure white.
The Great Egret with the light background was the first version. In 2017 I made the version with the dark background. I was figuring out how to incorporate the computer into my design process while also trying to understand how my creative process would adapt into making quilts. It was a lot to work through at one time, so I recycled an old tried-and-true design to simplify at least some of it.
