River otters are very playful creatures, seemingly in constant motion when they aren't sleeping. I wanted that fun-loving personality to come through in this painting. To accomplish that, I incorporated swirling water around this young river otter who is toying with a stone crab.
There is a lot of guesswork required in paintings like this because the situation is totally imagined. I worked from reference photos of otters and crabs, but the position of the animals, the movement of the water, and how the beams of light penetrate the water to shine on the creatures is completely imaginary.
This image will be exhibited in the Brevard County Aquarium Art Walk in 2021. The art walk has been chosen as one of the methods to raise awareness of the animals and plants that live in the Indian River Lagoon ecosystem and also of the fact that a new aquarium is being built in Brevard County, FL.
