A playful lion cub gets ready to pounce on his supposed-to-be-sleeping dad.
This picture was my entry into a contest in college. ”Waken the giants” was the theme, and many of the submissions were suitably epic. I wanted to do something a little different.
The browns in the tree had originally been more or less the same color as the lion’s mane. I was working with a very limited palette — just what fabrics I could find at the JoAnn’s that was a mile from my school — and I thought to myself, ”This will be fine.” On Critique Day in my Illustration class, the resounding feedback was that no, it was not okay, and the tree had to be set off from the lion somehow.
My solution was to lift the lion and cub’s paw — a process that involved re-ironing that area to melt the glue and carefully pulling the layers of fabric apart. I placed two layers of light blue tulle on top of the tree and reattached the rest of the picture. This gave the tree a slightly blue tint, making it seem further in the distance.
