I grew up in western Pennsylvania in a Pittsburgh suburb. My family owned 55 acres of wooded property near my home, and there were many, many fun-filled summer days and weekends spent out at ”The Woods”. We’d play in the creek, catch crayfish and salamanders, have cookouts and parties, and stuff ourselves full of hotdogs and marshmallows.
Every Spring, the hillside next to the picnic area — the location with the fire pit and creek that served as a base camp for all parties — was covered with white trillium. It was a gorgeous blanket of dark green and dappled white.
White Trillium, this picture, was one third of a triptych for my mom. The triptych, called Papa’s Woods, commemorated my family’s property, which has since been donated to a non-profit organization that maintains it as a public green space and preserve. Papa’s Woods was my first ”official” quilt.
